Is Sunshine Good for the Soul?

Bright blue skies. Soft breezes. Grass beneath your feet. Birds chirping. Being outside in God’s creation can have a profound impact on mental health, and sunshine may be one of the best medicines for those who are struggling.

This assertion is not only intuitive but also supported by recent studies that have examined the effect of aspects of nature on individuals’ moods. According to a study recently published in Scientific Reports, an analysis of 1,300 volunteers revealed that seeing or hearing birds multiple times a day can dramatically improve moods, even in those diagnosed with depression.

Another study published in Health Promotion International affirms that being in “blue spaces” – near lakes, rivers, and the coast – can improve mental health, and that exposure to these environments as children in particular can lead to improved mental health as adults. The powerful correlation between God’s creation and our overall well-being cannot be overstated.
